My name is Saihil Maropi although you can call me "Opi". I was born on August 30, 1988 in Kumai, a small village in Central Borneo. I have an older brother, Ambotuwo, and an older sister, Darmatsiah. We all live in our home town, Kumai. Some time ago, my brother used to be a senior guide in Tanjung Puting National Park and my sister has been working as a cook on a kelotok (boat) there for over twenty years.

I chose to become a tour guide because my brother told me he has made a lot of friends in different countries, and so he can learn about the cultures and languages of those places That’s really great. Not only that, he also taught me how to be a tour guide and become a conservation ambassador in Tanjung Puting National Park. There is one idea of his that I always remember: “If it is not us, the local people, who tell you about our place, who will?”. This led me to take the decision.

My career in Tanjung Puting National Park started as soon as I graduated from high school. I learnt on the job by working as an assistant on a boat. There, little by little, I managed to learn English by talking to the guests on the boat and finally in 2016 I became a certified guide from the HPI and ATTA associations. Since then I have worked as a freelance guide with several leading agents in Indonesia.

SOBRE MI

Mi nombre es Saihil Maropi aunque puedes llamarme "Opi". Nací el 30 de agosto de 1988 en Kumai, un pequeño pueblo en el centro de Borneo. Tengo un hermano mayor, Ambotuwo, y una hermana mayor, Darmatsiah. Todos vivimos en nuestra ciudad natal, Kumai. Hace algún tiempo mi hermano fue guía principal en el Parque Nacional Tanjung Puting y mi hermana ha estado trabajando allí como cocinera en un kelotok (barco) durante más de veinte años.

Elegí convertirme en guía turístico porque mi hermano me dijo que ha hecho muchos amigos en diferentes países y esto le ha permitido aprender mucho sobre las culturas y los idiomas de esos lugares. Eso es realmente genial. No solo eso, también me enseñó cómo ser un guía turístico y convertirme en un embajador de la conservación en el Parque Nacional Tanjung Puting. Hay una idea suya que siempre recuerdo: “Si no somos nosotros, la gente de aquí, los que os hablamos de nuestro lugar, ¿quién lo hará?”. Esto me llevó a tomar la decisión.

Mi carrera en el Parque Nacional Tanjung Puting comenzó tan pronto como me gradué de la escuela secundaria. Aprendí el oficio trabajando como asistente en un barco. Allí, poco a poco, logré aprender inglés hablando con los visitantes en el barco y más tarde, en 2016, me convertí en guía certificado por las asociaciones HPI y ATTA. Desde entonces he trabajado como guía independiente con varias agencias líderes en Indonesia.
